Virtual Summer Camp: Elementary School Tutor

  • 1.5-hour tutoring sessions

Position Description

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) Education team is seeking volunteers that would be great role models for our students by supporting them in completing their homework and strengthening their academic skills. Volunteers also have the opportunity to lead extracurricular activities remotely, as many of our students spend much of their time inside due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the past, volunteers have taught a virtual cooking class, guitar lessons, and coding.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Tutors will support the Elementary School program by offering one-on-one virtual homework help to elementary school students in grades 1-5. Homework help sessions are conducted via Google Meets. Volunteer tutors might also be used as substitutes for other volunteers at times.

Qualifications

  • Passionate, committed, engaging!

  • Experience in working with children is preferred, but not required.

  • Background in mathematics and/or English is preferred.

  • Stable internet connection

  • Gmail account

  • Volunteers must be 16 + years of age at the time of registration.

Time Commitment

  • Start on July 13; end on August 19

  • Tues & Thur 1.5-hour tutoring sessions between the hours of 2:30 PM - 6 PM (flexible). Volunteers must be available during both days.

​Training/Support Provided

Volunteers will undergo a brief and mandatory training with CIANA staff.

Virtual Summer Camp: Middle School Volunteer Tutor

Position Description

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) Education team is seeking volunteers that would be great role models for our middle school students by supporting them in completing their homework, strengthening their academic skills, and leading fun virtual activities for students.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Tutors will support the Middle School program by offering small group homework help to middle school students in grades 6-8. Homework help sessions are conducted via Google Meets. Due to occasional schedule changes, volunteer tutors will also substitute for other volunteer tutors at times.

Qualifications

  • Passionate, committed, engaging!

  • Experience in working with children is preferred, but not required.

  • Background in mathematics and/or English is preferred.

  • Stable internet connection

  • Gmail account

  • Volunteers must be 18 + years of age at the time of registration.

Time Commitment

  • Start on July 14th; end on August 20th

  • Wed and Fri. 1-hour tutoring sessions between the hours of 2:30 PM - 6 PM (flexible). Volunteers must be available during both days.

Training/Support Provided

Volunteers will undergo a brief mandatory training with CIANA staff.

ESL Instructor

  • Remote

  • Tues.-Thur.,       10:30am - 12pm

  • Jul. 20-Aug. 26

Position Description

CIANA is looking for a volunteer ESL instructor. Our classes are capped at 15 students whose English proficiency ranges from beginner to intermediate. You must be comfortable managing a diverse group of students and facilitating fun and interactive activities. Since our offices are still closed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, hours are negotiable and a schedule can be discussed upon hire.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instruct an open class

  • Write and deliver English lessons that incorporate reading, writing, speaking, and listening components based on a curriculum

  • Facilitate lessons on life skills and practice English in a fun and accessible way

  • Collaborate with other ESL teachers on lesson development and execution

  • Assist in tracking student needs and progress

Qualifications

  • Must have access to reliable internet and WiFi or data enable device

  • Charismatic, dynamic, and interactive instruction methods

  • Motivated to help students achieve their goals

  • Competent in and respectful of cultural differences

  • Passionate about advancing immigrant rights

  • Possesses a TEFL certificate (or similar) and/or is currently in a program to obtain certification is a plus! Retired teachers are encouraged to apply.

Time Commitment

  • Summer session: July 20th - August 26th (6 weeks)

  • Flexible 2 - 4 hours per week

  • Consistent availability on weekdays from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm
